Product Description
We Are Acadians-Nous Sommes Acadiens, by Myron Tassin and Fonville Winans, is a pictorial essay portraying the Cajuns of Louisiana. The book captures live the many faces of the timeless Cajun-witty, wise, tolerant, hard-working, and fun-loving. Farmers, fishermen, oil workers, and practitioners of a world-famous cuisine exemplify the Cajuns as they were and as they are in modern Louisiana. Author Myron Tassin collaborated with photographer Fonville Winans to depict a people who have turned a heritage of hardship into a philosophy of faith and optimism. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Myron Tassin is the author of three other Pelican books on the history and culture of Louisiana. The Last Line is a history of the New Orleans streetcar, The Delta Queen: Last of the Paddlewheel Palaces is a look at the famous riverboat that still plies the Mississippi. Mardi Gras and Bacchus: Something Old, Something New is a study of New Orleans Mardi Gras traditions. Tassin is also the co-author of Pelican's Fifty Years at the Grand Ole Opry. ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER Fonville Winans, whose work is widely known under the name "Fonville," is perhaps the premier photographer of Acadiana. A descendant of Louisiana's French Creoles, he traversed the bayou country for more than a decade during the 1920s and 1930s, recording the lives and folkways of the Acadian people.
